Don't forget your garden hoses out in the cold
Donovan O'Donnell
Frost hit last week in the Sioux Falls area. Lots of us covered their plants in hopes to keep those last few peppers and tomatoes.
Your root vegetables are ok to let the first couple of light frosts hit, in fact it will make them taste a little sweeter.
What is bitter? Having to buy new garden equipment in the spring. With that; now is the time to unhook outdoor hoses, drain with gravity, and store in your garage, or someplace that does not go below freezing temperatures. This will prevent your hoses from cracking. When spring arrives you won’t have to buy new ones to replace the ones that did not survive winter.
It is also a good idea to cover those gardens and flower beds with compost, dried leaves, and possibly tilling it into the topsoil, so that the nutrients can soak in over the winter with the melting piles of snow.
Now get out those seed catalogs and dream of how to make that garden that much better next year, that is if you finished your canning!
If you are looking for a new home with a place to plant that garden, or a bigger kitchen to can that harvest, give Exit Realty Sioux Empire a call!
