Broker Associate Donovan O'Donnell, training for the Helpline Center Step Forward to Prevent Suicide 5K
I cannot believe in November I started working out after a long absence of exercise in my daily routine. I remember “running” a half mile that day and thought that was a good place to start.
Well on Monday I told my wife I think I could handle a 5K this year. I had ran one once before that was in support of Suicide Prevention and we did a quick internet search. We found the Helpline center out of Brookings, SD was having one on the 16th of April, and I said, “well I did 2 miles this morning, what’s one more?” Yesterday I put the timer on for 30 minuets and started out. I did 3 miles with a little time to spare and the picture is of my treadmill when I hit the 3 mile mark! That third mile is a lot more by the way!
I am running in honor of my nephew Mason (Andrew Mason Oswald). He sadly took his own life and it shook our family and extended family. We think of him often and he is missed. I also run for a good friend of mine that lost his sister.
While I worked in hotels over the years I actually was able to find a guest that had attempted suicide and get her some help via 911. A co-worker of mine found a similar situation. Unfortunately, his find did not have a silver lining and the victim had already passed.
Suicide has affected almost everyone in some form. We are trying to bring information out into the open. For those that are thinking of suicide to talk about it and get help. For families that are asking the why questions after there is support. The Helpline is one way to find that needed support.
To date I have had one donation, if it moves you to pledge or join the run or the 1.5 mile walk, please follow the link.
